The quality and standard of health care provided to prisoners is the same as that provided in the community through the public health system. The Sant’Anna School Laboratory for Healthcare Management (MeS) is working on the 2017-2019 recommendations, issued for prisons in Tuscany, upon the request of the Tuscan Regional Authority, which include carrying out a healthcare assessment of all newly received prisoners to identify any physical and mental health problems.

A comprehensive approach to the prevention and management of suicide risk and a full compliance of the adequate healthcare provisions - Lea (Livelli Essenziali di Assistenza) are implemented across guidelines to improve healthcare in prisons. The Sant’Anna School Laboratory for Healthcare Management (MeS) and the Tuscany Region Healthcare Agency - Agenzia Regionale di Sanità www.ars.toscana.it/it/ are monitoring key indicators for best practice guidance and conducting epidemiological surveys because of a growing number of older prisoners with long-term conditions such as heart disease, cancer and dementia.

“The 2017-2019 Tuscany Region guidelines are an important step towards achieving parity of healthcare for people in prison (16 adult prisons and 2 detention camps in Pontremoli and Florence) that would reduce the pressure on community services later” said Stefania Saccardi, Regional Councilor for Healthcare.
