On Thursday, May 11, Sant’Anna and IUSS will award a PhD in Economics honoris causa to Professor Joseph E. Stiglitz, recipient of the 2001 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences for his path-breaking contributions to the economics of information. The event is organised within the celebrations of the 30th anniversary of Sant'Anna School of Advanced Studies.

Joseph E. Stiglitz is professor at Columbia University. He is also the co-chair of the High-Level Expert Group on the Measurement of Economic Performance and Social Progress at the OECD, and the Chief Economist of the Roosevelt Institute. He is a former senior vice president and chief economist of the World Bank and a former member and chairman of the (US president's) Council of Economic Advisers. His recent works focuses on the consequences of globalization, income distribution, macroeconomic policies and development.

In his lectio magistralis Professor Stiglitz will talk about the role of the Euro, topic of his last book The EURO and its threat to the future of Europe.

The Doctoral Degree in Economics conferment ceremony will be held at 3.00 pm in Sant'Anna School aula magna in the presence of Pierdomenico Perata, rector of Sant’Anna and Michele di Francesco, rector of IUSS. The PhD in Economics is a programme jointly offered by Sant'Anna School and IUSS.
