Culture of legality and civil commitment: Sant’Anna School will commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Capaci and via D'Amelio Mafia massacres on May 19, in Pisa and Pontedera

On May 19th, an event will be held in Pisa and Pontedera to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Mafia Capaci and Palermo massacres in which Giovanni Falcone, Paolo Borsellino, and the police officers escorting them lost their lives. The event is dedicated to the remembrance of the victims of the Mafia and is organized by Pisa and Pontedera city councils, the Fondazione Piaggio, Sant’Anna School, and the University of Pisa, Libera contro le mafie, Avviso Pubblico and Uisp anti-mafia associations. In particular, the debate aims to enhance public understanding of the cultures of legality and highlight the necessity of civil commitment. Understanding and analysing Italian organised crime focus on cultural explanations: organised crime groups are the by-product of a particular culture). The debate gives the opportunity for a better analysis of the Mafia's links with local political elites and the relationships between organised criminals, local politicians, businessmen and administrators.

The events, ranging from talks, debates and musical performances, will be held in lecture halls (Arsenali Repubblicani - via Bonanno Pisano, 2 – Pisa) and Piaggio museum. Speakers include: Franco Roberti, Italy’s leading Anti-mafia and antiterrorism prosecutor; Marco Filippeschi, mayor of Pisa; Simone Millozzi, mayor of Pontedera, Angela Pirri, deputy mayor of Pontedera Salvatore Laganà, president of Court of Justice of Pisa; Alberto Francini, Commissioner Chief of Pisa; Riccardo Costagliola , president of Piaggio Foundation; Marilù Chiofalo, City of Pisa Council member; Alessandro Crini, anti-mafia and antiterrorism prosecutor (it is thanks to the initiative of Giovanni Falcone that Italy created a specialized office of the public prosecutor, the National Anti-mafia Directorate); Emanuele Rossi, professor of constitutional law at Sant’Anna School; Alberto Vannucci, scientific coordinator of Master program in anti-corruption studies at the University of Pisa.

In addition to panel sessions, the Pisa and Pontedera meetings programme include debate and music sessions with distinguished speakers and guests: Luca Ribuoli and Antonio Bellia, filmakers (“La mafia uccide solo d'estate” and “La corsa de L’Ora”); Pippo Pollina, musician (concert at Museum Piaggio at 8.00 pm; e-mail to annalisa.rossi@fondazionepiaggio.it for reservation).

At 1.00 pm the “Staffetta per la legalità”, anti-mafia protest organized by Uisp marching through San Giuliano, Calci, Vicopisano and Bientina, will start in Arsenali Repubblicani – Pisa. The protest prompts a new enforcement effort focusing on sports drawing in a wide cross section of society. Protest march ends in Pontedera at 6.00 pm.

At 4.00 pm, the cinema   Arsenale - Pisa (vicolo Scaramucci, 2) is screening the documentary film “La corsa de L’Ora” in support to the Sicilian newspaper activism. Marilù Chiofalo, Alberto Vannucci, Cristiano Marcacci, journalist of Tirreno, and Antonio Bellia  will attend the film’s screening.
