Education

The three-year full-time Programme is taught entirely in English. At the end of the Course and following the final exam, the Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies awards the PhD degree.

The Programme is organised into three curricula:

The Embedded System curriculum offers real research possibilities on the emerging sector of embedded systems. In particular, the laboratories of the Institute give the students the opportunity to deepen, both practically and theoretically, various research themes, such as real-time computing, advanced scheduling theory and analysis, energy-aware algorithms, quality-of-service management, multiprocessor systems, software design methodologies and tools, sensor networks, mobile distributed systems, and security. The corresponding industrial applications cover a wide range of sectors, such as the automotive, aviation, multimedial systems, virtual reality, interactive games, consumption electronics, robotics, plant control, space missions, and telecommunications.

The Photonic Technologies curriculum is implemented in close collaboration with the CNIT National Laboratory of Photonic Networks and the Ericsson R&D Laboratory of Pisa. The research and training activity refers to the basic and advanced features of optical networks, optical signal elaboration, optical transmission systems, optical transmission theory, optical amplification, photonic switching, network protocols, wired-wireless integration, photonic integrated circuits, optical networking, such as all-optical processing, optical transmission systems, optical transmission theory, optical amplification, photonic switching, network protocols, and wired-wireless integration.

The Perceptual Robotics curriculum offers to students the opportunity to undertake an in-depth analysis of the themes of presence and advanced robotics technologies in interaction in virtual environments and in Teleoperation. The main research activities focus upon the design of tactile devices and effectors, acoustic and visual systems for virtual environments, mobile robotics and intelligent systems, human-machine interface control and teleoperation systems, perception and interaction design. The programme takes on various application fields, such as cultural heritage, civil protection, technological aid for the disabled, entertainment, medicine, simulators, rehabilitation, industrial planning, training and interaction design.
