SDG 8: Decent work and economic growth

SDG 8

Sustainable Development Goal number 8 (SDG 8) aims to promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all. This goal is fundamental for inclusive economic growth and poverty reduction.

Work is an essential element of human dignity and individual well-being. Yet, today millions of people around the world are unemployed or underemployed, with precarious working conditions and low wages.

SDG 8 includes several specific targets, including:

  • Promote sustained economic policies that create decent work and promote formalization.
  • Protect labour rights and promote safe and healthy working environments.
  • Promote effective youth employment and training opportunities.
  • Substantially reduce the proportion of youth not in employment, education or training.

Achieving SDG 8 will require a global effort to create a more inclusive and sustainable labour market. It is necessary to invest in education and skills training, promote entrepreneurship, and strengthen labour market institutions.

Everyone can contribute to achieving SDG 8 by choosing products and services from companies that respect workers' rights, supporting organizations working to promote decent work, and raising awareness about the problems of precarious work and exploitation.
