AGRICULTURE’S ANSWER TO CLIMATE CHANGE: ON SATURDAY, MAY 6, THE RECTOR OF SANT’ANNA GIVES HIS SEMINAR ON “RESILIENT PLANTS" AT MANTOVA FOOD&SCIENCE FESTIVAL

The Mantova “Food&Science Festival”, will be held in Mantova from May 5-7, 2017. The “Food&Science Festival” provides a platform for researchers and the general public to exchange concepts and to share ideas on agricultural production, manufacturing and consumption. The ultimate goal is to reduce the food system’s resource use, reprocess food waste and ensure a resilient and competitive food system. The Confagricoltura Mantova is a sponsor of the event organized in partnership with Ministero delle Politiche Agricole, Ambientali e Forestali and Regione Lombardia.

Professor Pierdomenico Perata, plant physiologist and rector of Sant’Anna School, will give his lecture on “Resilient Plants” and agriculture and climate change, on Saturday, May 6, at Loggia del Grano, 2.00 pm.

Professor Perata, scientific coordinator of the Institute of Life Sciences PlantLab, will talk on climate change, the processes affected by excess water and the impact on crop yields.

The soil and crop environment is affected by excess water through the depletion of oxygen. Good soil temperatures and conditions may help avoid chilling injury and lack of oxygen to the seeds. Climate change may disrupt food production and cause the next famine.

Professor Perata and his research group are investigating about consequences of climate change reducing crop productivity and how changes result in oxygen deficits.
