COPYRIGHT LAW AND FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION IN EU: CATERINA SGANGA, GOOGLE AND WIKIMEDIA REPRESENTATIVES ATTEND CONFERENCE ON THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 7
The conference "Owning expression and propertizing speech” is organized by the University of Luxembourg in association with the Institute of Information Law (IvIR) - University of Amsterdam and the School of Law of the University of Nottingham. The agenda include sessions on the liability mechanism for online content sharing service providers and the friction between copyright law and fundamental rights such as freedom of expression and freedom of the press.
Caterina Sganga, associate professor of comparative private law at Sant’Anna School Dirpolis (Law, Politics and Development) Institute, gives her talk on “The propertization of copyright under Article 17(2) CFREU: which impact on the fair balance?”. Sganga highlights the most controversial provision of article 17(2) CFREU on the protection of the right to freedom of expression and recent CJEU rulings on copyright such as the interpretation of the parody and quotation exceptions.
Keynote speakers include Maciej Szpunar, First Advocate General -Court of Justice of the European Union, Cedric Manara, head of Copyright - Google, Anna Mazgal, EU policy advisor -Wikimedia Deutschland.
