The Pisa City Council has donated 2,000 face masks to the students of Sant’Anna School, Scuola Normale and the University of Pisa who have remained in on-campus housing due to the coronavirus outbreak.  Sabina Nuti, the rector of Sant’Anna SchoolLuigi Ambrosio, the director of Scuola Normale Superiore and a representative of the Azienda Regionale per il Diritto allo Studio Universitario della Toscana – the Tuscany Department for Students’ Right to Higher Education received the masks from Mayor  Michele Conti. At the request of rectors and officials, 600 masks were delivered to Sant’Anna School, 400 to Scuola Normale Superiore and 1,000 to the Azienda Regionale per il Diritto allo Studio Universitario della Toscana.

“Over the past days, I called the rectors of our higher education institutions in Pisa to coordinate the delivery of the masks for the continued safety of the students who live on campus. The masks were  delivered on Tuesday, April 8.  Now, every single institution will distribute them on the basis of the students’ needs. While our communities need assistance to stop the spread of the virus, we are taking measures to ensure that all students in Pisa stay safe and protected.” said Mayor Michele Conti.

“I thank the Mayor Michele Conti for donating the masks to our students. We have been working to keep our community as safe as possible – said Rector Sabina Nuti - As a higher education institution, we realize that we must continue to be there to help our medical students who decided to stay in Pisa  and those who could not go back home due to the risk of being infected. I am inspired as I see our City Council and the local community coming together to support the right to education during the pandemic.”

“As Pisa and the students continue to battle the epidemic, our universities have followed public health guidance. The masks donated by the local authority  are effective to protect other students and people while walking around the campus or going to the cafeteria- added Sabina Nuti - Wearing a mask can guarantee that you do not transmit viruses and in case of contact with someone infected, a mask is crucial for reducing the chance of the disease in research laboratories and academic medical centres. We should remember masks are effective when used in combination with frequent hand-washing, social distancing and other preventive measures.”

“Responding to the coronavirus crisis, the Scuola Normale also shifted to online instruction, research and services – said Director Luigi Ambrosio - We are grateful to see the City Council’s readiness to support the students in Pisa.  Almost 400 students decided to stay in our residence halls or dorms. To minimize the impact of the infection, we will provide the masks to all of them.”
