Mafia enterprises and measures to tackle economic crime. An edited volume giving the findings from the research project coordinated by Sant’Anna School will be presented in Rome on Friday, 23 February

The publication titled “La Mafia come impresa. Analisi del sistema economico criminale e delle politiche di contrasto” was developed in connection with a research project coordinated by Sant’Anna School, the Italian National Council of Economy and Labor- CNEL, and participated by the Italian National Institute for Statistics- ISTAT. The outcomes of the research will be presented in Rome at CNEL headquarters on Friday, February 23, 11.00 am.

The book published by Franco Angeli presents the findings obtained from the research undertaken by Alberto di Martino, at Sant’Anna School Dirpolis Institute (Law, Politics, Development), and Guido M. Rey, at Sant’Anna School Institute of Management. The report has been officially requested by EUROSTAT - the statistical office of the European Union. Data have been collected from different authorities working in the field of drugs, human trafficking, tobacco smuggling and other illegal activities. The report also provides important information on different practices which should be taken into account when interpreting the results; as organized crime has diversified, gone global and become a transnational problem, without the necessary legislative and law enforcement responses, the economic crime is set to grow. Future illegal activities may take place in the context of new and emerging business models such as crowd-sourced initiatives and e-commerce businesses. In the light of transnational threats, information sharing through the interconnection of relevant databases and specific knowledge would be viewed as a way of improving the national and international security.

The future of law enforcement will be about statistical expertise in processing available data. Satellite Accounts on criminal economy will provide a framework linked to national accounts measuring the impact of illicit trade from different angles (money laundering, tax fraud and corruption).
