General Claudio Graziano, the Commander in Chief of Defense of the Italian Armed Forces, and General Tullio Del Sette, Commanding General of the Carabinieri military police, greet EU trainees in European Security at Sant’Anna School in Pisa on June 23, 2017. At the meeting with the Gruppo Intervento Speciale (GIS) and the Carabinieri Paracadutisti del 1° Reggimento Tuscania, General Claudio Graziano and General Tullio Del Sette expressed their great appreciation to Professor Andrea de Guttry, of Sant’Anna Dirpolis Institute (Law, Politics, Development) and the scientific coordinator of the training course. To date, Sant’Anna School and the First Regiment Tuscania have provided assistance in support of peacekeeping and security management training in Livorno.

The Lisbon Treaty formally endorses the extension of the ‘Petersberg Tasks’, that include humanitarian operations and rescue tasks, military advice in conflict areas, also including the fight against terrorism.

“Training is an important aspect of successful operational engagement. The training conducted by the Regiment Tuscania, following its comprehensive approach, is very practical, intensive and demanding. The instructors share the best of their expertise and the course is tailored to the requirements of the EU officials”, said General Claudio Graziano.

On June 23, General Claudio Graziano and General Tullio Del Sette attended a counter terrorism training exercise. GIS Special Forces and Tuscania soldiers took part in the operation. “The Italian Armed Forces – said General Graziano – are facing a challenging threat environment. They tackle security threats in Africa, Iraq and Afghanistan. Italy will help unstable areas to sort out their political problems. A greater interaction of defense capability, diplomatic capability and development capability is needed because the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) has become the preeminent terrorist threat. Mixed civil-military participation is playing a significant role in the implementation of the EU’s comprehensive approach to crisis management”.
