SDG 1: No Poverty
Eradicating poverty in all its forms remains one of the greatest challenges facing humanity. Despite significant progress in recent decades, over 700 million people still live on less than $1.90 a day, and many more lack access to basic necessities such as food, water, sanitation, and healthcare.
SDG 1 calls for the end of poverty in all its forms by 2030. This ambitious goal will require a concerted effort from governments, businesses, and civil society to address the root causes of poverty, such as inequality, discrimination, and lack of access to education and healthcare.
Here are some of the key targets of SDG 1:
- Eradicate extreme poverty for all people everywhere.
- Reduce by at least half the proportion of people living in poverty in all its dimensions, according to national definitions.
- Implement appropriate social protection systems and measures for all, including social insurance floors.
- Ensure equal rights to economic resources as well as access to basic services, ownership and control over land and other forms of property, inheritance, natural resources, new technologies and financial services.
- Build the resilience of the poor and vulnerable to and from climate-related extreme events and other economic, social and environmental shocks and disasters.
- Mobilize significant resources from a variety of sources, including enhanced international cooperation, to provide adequate, reliable, predictable and sustainable means for developing countries, in particular least developed countries and small island developing States, to implement policies and programmes aimed at eradicating poverty in all its forms.
Achieving SDG 1 will not only lift millions of people out of poverty but also create a more just and equitable world for all. It is an essential step towards building a sustainable future for our planet.
