SDG 6: Clean water and sanitation

Acqua SDG 6

Sustainable Development Goal number 6 (SDG 6) aims to ensure access to water and sanitation for all. This goal is fundamental to human health, development and environmental protection.

Water is a vital resource for human life, but still today millions of people around the world do not have access to clean water and safe sanitation. This can lead to serious health problems, such as diarrhoeal diseases, cholera and trachoma.

SDG 6 includes several specific targets, including:

  • By 2030, achieve universal and equitable access to safe and affordable drinking water for all.
  • By 2030, achieve universal and equitable access to adequate sanitation and hygiene for all and end open defecation practices.
  • Improve water quality by reducing pollution significantly, eliminating the dumping of chemicals and materials, and halving the proportion of untreated wastewater by 2030.
  • Support and strengthen the participation of local communities in water and sanitation management.

Achieving SDG 6 will require a global effort to improve water management and invest in water and sanitation infrastructure. It is also necessary to promote hygiene behaviors and raise awareness about the importance of water for health and development.

Everyone can contribute to achieving SDG 6 by reducing their own water consumption, being careful not to waste it, and supporting organizations working to ensure access to clean water and sanitation for all.
