The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity and the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme released a technical guidance document on "Mainstreaming ecosystem services and biodiversity into agricultural production and management in the Pacific Islands", co-authored by Paolo Bàrberi, associate professor of agroecology and agronomy at Sant’Anna School Institute of Life Sciences.

The document aims to support Pacific Island countries to implement their National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs) and to support environmental protection and agrobiodiversity preservation also reducing the excessive use of agrochemicals. The target is to introduce best practices for integrating biodiversity and ecosystem services into agriculture.

Specifically, Paolo Bàrberi’s research focused on “Ecological Weed Management” and relevant aspects of weed ecology.

The document was launched at the thirteenth meeting of the Biodiversity Conference of the Parties in Cancun (Mexico). Paolo Barberi also worked on similar guidelines which were issued in May 2016 for implementing the Convention on Biological Diversity provisions for sustainable agriculture in Sub-saharan Africa. These documents are part of a series of technical guidance publications to identify key entry points for policy action and to foster cross-sectorial collaboration.
