COOPERATION BETWEEN ITALY AND SAHEL: TRAINING COURSES FOR LOCAL JUDGES, ORGANISED BY THE SANT'ANNA SCHOOL WITH THE SUPPORT OF THE ITALIAN MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS, AND THE COLLABORATION OF THEIR AFRICAN COUNTERPARTS, ARE KICKING OFF NEXT WEEK
Cooperation between Italy and the Sahel countries is been further consolidating, thanks to the contribution of the Sant'Anna School and the decisive support of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (Maeci). Our country will in fact organise a series of training courses aimed at magistrates from Niger, Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali, Mauritania. This new training cycle is taking place after the previous courses targeted to the Niger judiciary, on "Training of trainers" (August 2018), "Techniques for combating international terrorism" (February 2019), "International Judicial Cooperation" (October 2020) and the first edition of the course on "Fight against cybercrime and protection of personal data" (May 2021). The second edition of the course "Fight against cybercrime and protection of personal data" will be the first in the series of courses to be organised, and will take place in a hybrid format, in presence in Niamey (Niger) on the first day and online the next three days. The other training courses will take place in May 2022, in Niger (“Techniques for countering international terrorism - second edition”), Burkina Faso and Chad (“Project management cycle”).
All the courses are part of the project "Strengthening the judicial systems of the G5 Sahel countries through training", financed by Maeci and coordinated by Andrea de Guttry, Full Professor of International Law at the Sant'Anna School. Course lecturers include Italian and African magistrates and academics. The Sahel is a priority area for Italian cooperation and this project intends to enhance the skills and competences of magistrates in these countries, strengthening their knowledge of the national, regional and international regulatory framework on counter-terrorism and organised crime, cybercrime and personal data protection, as well as project management cycle. The training programme includes an in-depth study of specific topics and exercises through case studies.
“This initiative bears witness once again to Italy's commitment to Niger and the other countries of the Sahel, a key area in the geopolitical balances between Europe and Africa, engaged in the fight against the clandestine trafficking of migrants and international terrorism”, comments the course director, Andrea de Guttry.
