Italian-Niger cooperation: the training course for the Niger judiciary, financed by the Farnesina and coordinated by the Sant'Anna School, has been concluded
The Sant'Anna School of Pisa, thanks to the decisive support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MAECI), has organised a training course aimed at magistrates in Niger, entitled ‘Countering organised crime through justice and policing’ (Niamey, 1-3 October 2024). The organisation of the advanced training course is part of the Project ‘Strengthening the judicial systems of African countries through training (2023-24)’, coordinated by Prof. Andrea de Guttry, which has seen the Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna engaged for several years in training and assistance activities in the Sahel region, and in particular in Niger.
The course, which concluded on Thursday 3 October in the presence of H.E. Roberto ORLANDO, Head of Mission of the Italian Embassy in Niger, was organised in partnership with the Niger Ministry of Justice and hosted by theÉcole de Formation Judiciaire du Niger (EFJN). The objective of the training is to enhance a more effective use of regulatory tools - domestic and international - in the fight against organised crime, in line with new practices that are emerging globally. The course consolidated the participants' skills in special investigative techniques and international cooperation tools, both for evidence collection and recovery of criminal proceeds. The course benefited from the participation of prominent Italian and African experts, including Dr. Alberto PERDUCA, former Public Prosecutor with extensive experience in international judicial cooperation, and Dr. Federico BELLI, judge at the Court of Asti.
As evidence of the close cooperation with the Niger partners, the Italian delegation was also invited to participate in the initiative of the Italian Embassy in Niger ‘A window on Italy’, which saw Dr. Perduca and Dr. Belli as speakers at the conference entitled ‘The right to asylum in the Italian experience’ organised at theAbdou Moumouni University of Niamey and intended for an audience of university students.
‘The Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna is proud to contribute to this important technical assistance project, which aims to strengthen the skills of actors in the judiciary sector,’ comments Prof. Andrea de GUTTRY, Director of the Course. ’We are convinced that through cooperation and the strengthening of judicial institutions, we can promote the rule of law and stability in a region that is strategic for Italian cooperation and for the geopolitical balances between Europe and Africa.
