EU ECO-MANAGEMENT AND audit scheme (eMAS): the european commission ADOPTED JUNE 2017 REPORT EVALUATING EU ECHOLABEL SCHEME LAUNCHED IN 1992. Sant’Anna SCHOOL INSTITUTE OF MANAGEMENT COMMISSIONED TO ASSESS EMAS REGULATION AND ECHOLABEL TOOL
On June 30, 2017, the European Commission presented to the European Parliament a review on the implementation of EMAS Regulation (Reg 761/01 EC) and on the voluntary participation by organizations in the Ecolabel Scheme. The review was commissioned to the Institute of Management of Sant’Anna School together with its partners including consultants of adelphi - Berlin. Professor Fabio Iraldo coordinated the analysis of the functioning and performance of EMAS and Echolabel voluntary schemes also focusing on the companies promoting environmental excellence as a credible reference for consumers. The Ecolabel is still one of the practical tools of the circular economy to respond to growing consumer demand for more sustainable products.
“Extensive research on the benefits of EMAS since 1995 – said Fabio Iraldo – has been stimulated by the European Commission. The survey data analysed the environmental and economic performances of 460 European EMAS certified companies and Member State EMAS representatives playing a key role in implementing and supporting EMAS at national level. Results showed that with EMAS organizations can reduce their environmental impacts, strengthen legal compliance and employee involvement, and save resources”.
Depending on the support of Member States, the Commission will develop actions to further increase the added value of the eco-management audit scheme. There are additional opportunities to use EMAS as a tool for decreasing administrative burden and regulatory relief. The EMAS certification schemes provide a guarantee of environmental and competitive improvements and give an advantaged position to the EMAS certified organizations that can be granted administrative and economic benefits, can be included as certified groups in call for proposals and access to EU funding opportunities.
