SANT’ANNA PARTICIPATES IN THE SMAU EVENT 2019: ON OCTOBER 22, ANDREA SABA, A POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER AT THE DIRPOLIS INSTITUTE (LAW, POLITICS AND DEVELOPMENT) ATTENDS THE WORKSHOP ON BLOCKCHAIN TECHNOLOGY FOR AGRICULTURE
Sant’Anna School postdoctoral researcher Andrea Saba participates in the SMAU2019 event in Milan, on Tuesday, October 22.
The event brought together academics and experts from the agriculture sector to discuss the role of the blockchain technology in ensuring safety and improving efficiency of the Food Supply Chain.
Alongside presentations from leading academics, the workshop session Blockchain e Agricoltura: casi d’uso e potenzialità per lo sviluppo delle filiere was dedicated to discussing complex agricultural transactions through smart contracts, traceability of food origins, access to financing, and transactions data storing.
Originally devised for the digital currency, the blockchain technology is reshaping the agriculture industry by decreasing the risk of fraudulent activities, boosting transaction speeds, helps farmers control and analyze crops and smaller farmers to enter the market. By mapping the whole food supply chain and journey, blockchain is expected to grow at an annual growth rate of 87% and increase from $45 million in 2018 to $3,314.6 million by 2023 (2019 reports).
Launched in 1964, the SMAU initiative has become one of the most important Italian events dedicated to Information & Communication Technology and Innovation solutions. It is designed to support national and international companies in the acquisition of technology and innovation. Each year, SMAU invites more than 50,000 digital companies, start-ups, incubators, accelerators to join the platform that connects companies and local authorities with members of the entire innovation ecosystem.
