Tenth edition of the World Water Forum: seminar by the Dirpolis Institute (Law, Politics, Development) and the Interdisciplinary Research Center for Sustainability and Climate of the Sant'Anna School on ethical and social profiles of water management
In Bali a "side event" dedicated to the resource water, which is globally increasingly scarce and one of the most problematic chapters of the overall challenge posed by climate change
"Ethical and Social Challenges in Water Management: Academia, Institutions and Good Practices in Comparison" is the workshop organized by the Dirpolis Institute (Law, Politics, Development) and the Interdisciplinary Research Center for Sustainability and Climate of the Sant'Anna School that took place in Bali, Indonesia, on Tuesday, May 21, and was a "side event" as part of the 10th "World Water Forum – Water for Shared Prosperity", whose proceedings close on Saturday, May 25. The workshop, under the scientific coordination of Alberto Pirni, Associate Professor of Moral Philosophy at the Sant'Anna School, was held under the patronage of the Embassy of Italy in Indonesia and East Timor and Asean, Association of Southeast Asian Nations. It also benefited from the collaboration of World Meteorological Organization, One Water Italian Committee e AcquaNovara.VCO.
The seminar focused on some of the main ethical and social challenges related to the management of water as a scarce resource and, at the same time, as a source of systemic risks. The topic was first addressed by placing two academic profiles in dialogue: that of "water ethics" and hydrology. Specific case studies and examples of best practices were analyzed within the broad theoretical profile made possible by these disciplines. The overall theoretical perspective thus outlined was compared with case studies and selected "best practices" at three different and complementary levels: the national level, with particular reference to the activities of public utilities in the sector, and the international level, with particular reference to centralized emergency planning. The overall objective of the workshop was to offer an articulate point of view dedicated to a resource such as water, which is globally increasingly scarce and certainly one of the most problematic chapters of the overall challenge posed by climate change to every system of social life and at all latitudes of the planet.
