The application deadline for fourteen “Seasonal Schools” offered by the Sant’Anna School for Advanced Studies in Pisa is Monday21 September 2020. The Seasonal School interdisciplinary programs offer talented Italian and international students the unique opportunity to access cutting edge research in areas such as material science and engineering, information and industrial engineering, physics, and optics.

These ten-day courses will be offered in an online interactive format. “Photons-@” (“Photonic technologies for sensing applications”) in the first session will introduce the basic principles of photonics. Participants are introduced to the optic and electro-optic components integrated with electronic computing devices that have revolutionized our modern life including electronics, telecommunications, energy, oil & gas, transportation aerospace, bio-chemical and the automotive and medical sectors.

Photonic technologies have played a key role in the last decades to address the high demand for data traffic by telecommunication networks and data centres. The industrial development of Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) optical communications systems and networks in the nineties and the more recent interest in photonic integration for data centres to overcome their well-known electronic bottleneck, have driven the technology to a high level of maturity, opening the way to many other industrial fields and applications. Optical fiber sensors and photonic sensors, in general, offer many advantages compared to conventional electronic-based sensors, immunity to electromagnetic interference, small size and weight, high multiplexing capabilities, and robust design for applications in harsh environments.

Candidates are required to possess a basic knowledge of math, algebra, geometry, computer programming, electromagnetism, and optics. The “Seasonal School” “Photons-@” will provide students with the basic skills to understand the industrial requirement for photonic sensing, including specific niche applications, as for example, aerospace and high energy physics, as well as applications addressing large volume market sectors in automotive and transportation industry.

Upon successful completion of the program students will receive a certificate of attendance providing recognition of credits (CFU) assigned to each module. Discount may be applied to the tuition fee depending on household income. The “Il Talento all’Opera Foundation scholarships covering 50% of tuition fee cost will be awarded to four students who attains the highest score in the final examination. Students from partner universities (University of CataniaUniversity of ViterboUniversity of TrentoFondazione OnaosiUniversity of MessinaUniversity of Macerata)  are eligible for 10% tuition fee discount.
