The common challenge that the AMMIRARE project addresses is to make the beach system more resilient to climate change (CC) risks through the implementation of naturalistic solutions. Coastal erosion, sediment loss and reduced beach width are just some of the risks that coastal communities and their territorial authorities will face in the future, compounded by the loss of natural and economic capital. The objective of the project is to increase the inherent resilience of the beach system by improving the process of adaptation to CC. The partnership, representative of the crossborder scenario, implements pilot actions based on the concept of natural-based solutions (NbS) combined with innovative monitoring systems and tools for contrasting and predicting the effects of CC on the beach system. AMMIRARE is based on an approach of sharing and cooperation between partners and between local actors in the territories involved. Its innovative approach combines applied research activities with co-ordinated governance tools that combine ecological, morphological and socio-economic aspects of coastal management. The project envisages the realisation of four main outputs including the AMMIRARE Platform, a technological tool that supports regions in their decision-making processes on solutions to be implemented in a CC scenario. The target groups benefiting from the outputs, the numerous deliverables and the many communication and training initiatives are: local, regional and national public authorities, SMEs, citizens and tourists as well as research institutes. The cross-border approach is therefore crucial for solving the common problems faced by coastal regions in coping with a climate adaptation process. Cooperation between the AMMIRARE partners allows for the comparison and exchange of experiences that are indispensable for a coordinated management of the beach system.
