Call for application 2022-23 to the Ph.D. in Emerging Digital Technologies

The Ph.D. Programme in Emerging Digital Technologies is a full-time, mandatory attendance three-year programme with an interdisciplinary approach, which provides an exhaustive training path with structured teaching and supervised research activities with a view to producing an original thesis to discuss in a public examination.

In line with the standards of excellence pursued by the School, the objective of the programme is to train a professional figure able to successfully integrate in both national and international public and private research facilities and in companies manufacturing products or service providers operating in the field of communication, information, and perception technologies.

Number of positions available

6 positions with scholarship, of which 5 funded by Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna and 1 funded under Ministerial Decree n. 351/2022 Mission 4, Component 1, Investment 4. Ph.D. in Cultural Heritage”: candidates should submit a research project on efficient management and development of the Country’s enormous cultural heritage seizing the new opportunities offered by the digital transition

divided among the curricula as follows:

  • curriculum Embedded Systemsat least 2 positions
  • curriculum Photonic Technologies: at least 2 positions
  • curriculum Perceptual Roboticsat least 2 positions

 

4 positions with scholarship funded under Ministerial Decree n. 352/2022 – mission 4, component2 , investment 3.3 of PNRR – “Innovative Ph.D.” of which:

  • 1 cofinanced by Hitachi Rail STS, dedicated to carrying out research activities in the field of Innovative Embedded Systems for Railway Applications;
  • 1 cofinanced by Sma-RTy e CNR,  dedicated to carrying out research activities in the field of Smart and secure communication through Quantum Key Distribution (SMARTQKD).
  • 2 cofinanced by National, Inter-University Consortium for Telecommunications, (CNIT),  dedicated to carrying out research activities in the field of (i) Telecommunications Networks and Systems (ii) Microwave Photonics

1 position with scholarship funded by Leonardo SpA on the topic "Robotics and Applied Artificial Intelligence (RAAI) for human robot team collaboration –Research and Development to create intelligent and semi-autonomous interactive systems for human activity detection and task collaboration

n. 1 additional scholarship funded by the European Union – NextGenerationEU was made available, as part of the "Public Notice for the Presentation of Intervention Proposals for the Strengthening of Research Structures and Creation of "national R&D champions" on Key Enabling Technologies funded under the National Recovery and Resilience Plan, Mission 4 Component 2 Investment 1.4 "Strengthening research structures and creation of "national R&D champions" on Key Enabling Technologies" funded by the European Union - NextGenerationEU ", approved by MUR Directorial Decree n. 3138 of December 16, 2021.

no. 1 additional scholarship, funded by the European Union – NextGenerationEU, was made available, as part of the "Public Notice for the Presentation of Intervention Proposals for the creation and strengthening of "innovation ecosystems", construction of "R&D territorial leaders" - Innovation ecosystems, funded under the National Recovery and Resilience Plan, Mission 4 Component 2 Investment 1.5 funded by the European Union - NextGenerationEU ", approved by MUR Directorial Decree n. 3277 of December 30, 2021.

Furthermore, before the beginning of the Course, based on specific agreements, and pursuant to current legislation, following positions may be activated:

  • positions dedicated to specific industrial research activities, in partnership with organizations and private companies;
  • positions intended for apprenticeship contracts (High-level Apprenticeship PhD);
  • positions reserved for employees of companies which perform research and development activities (Industrial PhD).
  • positions reserved to foreign recipients of scholarship.

PhD positions mentioned above are reserved for eligible candidates under the provision of a grant or a scholarship, from a public or private sponsor, at least equal to the three years Sant’Anna scholarship (including canteen services, periods out of office and external research activities).


Scholarship amount

Euro 16,243.00 gross beneficiary per every year of course paid in deferred monthly installments. The amount is inclusive of social security charges. In addition, students can take advantage:

  • 26 free monthly meals at the school canteen excluding academic holiday periods
  • an increase of € 4.060 gross beneficiary for the period of study and research abroad, subject to the authorization of the Faculty Board
  • a budget of € 4.873 to be allocated to cover expenses related to the research activity
  • an additional contribution of € 2,200/year as reimbursement for accommodation costs reserved for off-site students to be paid based on Equivalent Economic Status Index (ISEE).
