Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies mourns the loss of the President Emeritus of the Italian Republic, Carlo Azeglio Ciampi, alumnus of Scuola Normale Superiore and always a true friend to Sant’Anna School, who retained a close relationship with Sant’Anna Alumni Association and often participated in the meetings organized by the Alumni Association on the most important events in our life.

Carlo Azeglio Ciampi, was born in Livorno in 1920. During his long career he has served as Governor of the Bank of Italy for 14 years, as Prime Minister in 1993, and as President of the Italian Republic from 1999 to 2006.

Even after graduation, Carlo Azeglio Ciampi maintained his true friendship with the top two universities in Pisa. Among the many testimonies of closeness, in 2009, students and young alumni of Sant'Anna School and Scuola Normale Superiore dedicated to him the book "Conversations with the President. Students and alumni of Pisa Schools of Excellence talk with Carlo Azeglio Ciampi" edited by three Sant’Anna students –the "santannini" Luca Gori, Giuseppe Martinico and Elettra Stradella and a Normale student- the “normalista” Michele Campopiano. The essay has focused on the training and education of the President Emeritus and analyzed the key issues of political and institutional debate, even through the analysis of Ciampi’s speeches during his seven years in office. Also in recent times, on the sidelines of a meeting at the Sant'Anna School, accompanied by his wife Franca, the conversation with students and alumni had become a long interview - one of the last granted by Ciampi - then published on the Sant'Anna News.

"To Mrs. Franca and whole family - said Pierdomenico Perata, rector of Sant'Anna School, upon hearing the news – we extend our Sant’Anna School heartfelt sympathies and condolences. Carlo Azeglio Ciampi was one of the men who guided Italy to the XXI century. He was a convinced European - adds Perata – who led our country as a 'man who sincerely respect the institutions', working to relaunch the national identity as closely linked to European identity. Since he strongly supported the European Union and the values at the basis of its foundation, he greatly contributed to a successful conclusion of the European integration process. We will remember Carlo Azeglio Ciampi and his contribution to global growth of Italy and Sant'Anna School. On our 30th anniversary celebration in 2017 – the rector underlines - a special session will be devoted to Carlo Azeglio Ciampi ".
