The pervasive diffusion of multimedia applications over Wireless Local Area Networks stimulated the improvement of the provided Quality of Service (QoS). On-line gaming, multimedia streaming, Voice Over IP, High-Definition TV, mobile applications, etc., expect a service differentiation suitable to deliver these types of traffic respecting their service requests and avoiding data degradation. Furthermore, the increasing numbers of users heighten the levels of required service stressing the provisioning mechanism.
This series of lectures will cover the different methods and issues related to the QoS provisioning over wireless networks at the MAC layer, taking as examples IEEE 802.11e networks. The main families of algorithms for the QoS support will be described.
