The seminar will present the first results of a collective research – involving more than 60 authors and covering more than 30 countries – that aims at mapping the data, relevance and typologies of food-producing common lands in Europe (“Territories of Commons in Europe”). Some authors of the network will present their research on specific countries.

"During 2021, a network of commons researchers and commoners was launched to assess the extension of common lands in Europe and its importance as food-producing systems within the European food landscape. A network of 67 scholars and commoners from 35 European countries has been created with a concrete goal: release a state-of-the-art report with the latest figures and detailed explanations on "territories of commons" in Europe. We will produce two peer-reviewed articles on how much land is owned/governed/managed as a commons (collectively), how many people are involved in the commons management and how relevant are those areas for producing food. The final goal of this initiative is to raise the political profile and legitimacy of territories of commons in European politics, presenting the first-ever data compilation for all European countries regarding the commons. In this Seminar, 8-9 country case studies will be presented, to give a taste of the richness of territories of commons in Europe, the diversity of institutional arrangements, proprietary schemes, historical roots, enduring features, troubling past and promising future. First elements regarding typologies, relevance at national level and common threats will be discussed during the seminar".
