Luca Poltronieri Rossetti

Luca Poltronieri Rossetti is postdoctoral researcher at the Institute of Law, Politics and Development of Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies, where he is currently working in connection with teaching and research activities of the Jean Monnet Chair "European and International Human Rights Standards in Conflict and Disasters" (EIHRSCaD), held by Prof. Emanuele Sommario. Previously, he has worked on a research project on the impact on human rights of illicit trade in Syria and Iraq.

He holds a Master’s Degree in Law and a PhD in International Law from the University of Trento (Italy), where he has been teaching assistant in the courses of international law and the law of international organizations. He has interned with the Trial Chamber of the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia and he has been visiting scholar at the Amsterdam Center for International Law of the UvA.

At the Scuola, he regularly lectures on public international law, human rights, international criminal law, and the protection of vulnerable groups (women, children) in armed conflict.

His research mainly focuses on international criminal law, international criminal courts and tribunals, and procedure, with particular regard to the role of prosecutorial discretion in international criminal trials. Recently, he has focused on sexual and gender-based violence in armed conflict and on the protection of the environment through international criminal law (with particular regard to environmental war crimes and ecocide). His 2019 article "The Pre-Trial Chamber's Afghanistan Decision: A Step Too Far in the Judicial Review of Prosecutorial Discretion" was awarded the 2019 Journal of International Criminal Justice Prize.
