Extreme Temperature, Mortality And Occupation

The Institute of Economics will hold a webinar meeting as part of its Seminar Series on Tuesday, December 22, 2020: Luis Sarmiento from the RFF-CMCC European Institute on Economics and the Environment will present the paper "Extreme Temperature, Mortality And Occupation".

Abstract:

Even though a worker’s trade is a crucial determinant of temperature-related mortality, only a handful of studies look at temperature’s effect across different labor groups. This study contributes to this scarce literature by examining temperature’s impact across agricultural, informal, blue-collar, whitecollar, and unemployed workers. Results show that white-collar workers are significantly more resilient to extreme temperatures than the other occupations. Old retired, agrarian, and informal laborers are the most affected labor groups. Additionally, the authors provide evidence that climate zones influence the effect and that extreme temperatures kill workers through heart attacks and a higher likelihood of diabetes and influenza-related mortality.
