Bio

Giulia De Masi is Visiting Researcher of the BioRobotics Institute since 2023. M. Sc, in Physics in 2003 (with honors), she completed her PhD in 2006 with a thesis on Complex Networks within the Institute of Complex Systems (CNR), the University of Rome La Sapienza, and University of L’Aquila. She was Post-doctoral Researcher in the Polytechnic University of Marche, in  collaboration with City University in London, and Visiting Researcher at Hitachi Research Laboratory, in Nara, Japan. In 2008, she started working in the R&D field for the Private Sector, in Advanced Engineering Services and Technology Innovation Projects in the marine environment.
Since 2016, she worked in several academic institutions in United Arab Emirates, before joining the Technology Innovation Institute in Abu Dhabi where she served for 4 years as Principal Scientist.
Her multidisciplinary professional path has always been at the interface between Mathematical Modeling, Data Analysis, Machine Learning, and Collective Intelligent Systems.
She applies the theoretical approach from Statistical Physics, to biological, social and artificial systems, developing bio-inspired algorithms for cyber-physical systems. In this field, she led a few projects on Underwater Swarm Robotics, and advanced Machine Learning.

She has two patents, more than sixty peer-reviewed publications (including journals and international conferences) and more than forty reports for Industry.
She is an active IEEE Senior member and ACM member. She has been recently awarded as Women in Engineering (WIE) Propel laureate IEEE by Oceanic Engineering Society in liaison with WIE.
